Kids Say the Darndest Things: Roan’s Thoughts on God

–One of the elements that we really appreciated about our son Roan’s preschool and kindergarten experience at Scottsdale Learning Centers was that the kids said Grace before their meals.
With so many other new experiences and lessons, this little 5 year-old was eager to share what he learned at school. His observations and recaps popped up randomly throughout the day.
“Mom,” Roan interjected one day in the car, “I know who God is.”
Well this is a good discussion, I thought to myself. “Tell me more, Sweetie.”
“It’s Miss Linnette,” he added matter-of-factly.
I did not see this coming. Miss Linnette, always a friendly face in the school’s lunch room, is the North Phoenix child care’s cook who prepares the meals for the kids every day. He took this conversation far from where I thought it was going. I had to sheepishly acknowledge that my husband and I hadn’t discussed spirituality very much with Roan. Since he holds me to details and doesn’t easily forget conversations, I had to answer him carefully.
“Umm…no, Honey. God isn’t a person to meet. We can talk to God in our hearts, but we can’t have a conversation or shake hands with him. Miss Linette isn’t God.”
Roan looked stunned. It was like he was the last one in on a secret. It all became clear when he explained his confusion, “Then why do we say our ‘Thank you, God, Thank you, God, For our Lunch” prayer every time Miss Linnette gives us our lunch?”–
