Make Your Own Baked Sweet Potato Mash

September 13th, 2011 by Olivia Rognstad

Hi there parents,

Here is another one of my favorite first food recipes.  Just follow these easy steps to make homemade sweet potato baby food.

Ingredients:

2 large sweet potatoes

1/4 cup extracted breast milk or formula – use as needed

Procedure:

1.  Preheat oven to 400 F

2.  Wash and dry sweet potatoes well

3.  Wrap potatoes in foil tightly.  Make 3-4 holes through the foil into the potatoes using a knife or fork.

4. Place the wrapped potatoes directly on a rack in the middle of the oven and back for approximately 45 minutes.  Cooking time will vary as the size of potatoes varies quite a bit.  Test doneness by placing a fork through the potato.  It should easily slide through to the center.  If you encounter any resistance, cook the potato longer.

5.  Remove potatoes from oven when cooked completely.

6.  Allow to cool for 10-20 minutes.  When just cool enough to handle, remove foil.

7.  Scoop the flesh of the potato into a bowl or directly into food processor.

8.  Use food processor to puree until very smooth or use a fork to mash by hand.  Some sweet potatoes may be stringy, so make sure that you break up these strings so that the puree is completely smooth.  You want to make sure you don’t leave stringy bits because these could be difficult for your baby to chew and could be a choking hazard.

9.  Add breast milk or formula if needed to create the desired consistency.  If this is one of the first times your baby has eaten solid food, I suggest making it very smooth and eliminating all chunks.  As your child gets more comfortable, you can add less liquid.

10.  Use within 2 days or freeze immediately.  If freezing, make sure to freeze individual servings.  Serve warm or cold.
